Content at Scale is Now BrandWell: The Story

Today’s a pretty massive day for Content at Scale history.

We’re unveiling the rebrand:

The Story

The evolution to today has been a long, but somehow amazingly fast journey.

As it goes in the AI space… I tell people all the time, 12 months in normal industries is 1 month in AI time. It’s absolutely mind boggling what is happening in this space.

When Content at Scale began in December of 2021, it was just Kamran and I. I launched it as a service initially as we were working through gpt-2 and gpt-3 models to get content creation automated in a long form format. I sold $30k of recurring revenue in the first 3 weeks, had to hire several “editors” who just needed to – what I hoped – make small edits and publish on the client’s behalf.

We were the first to market this as an AI content agency. We sold packages for $1k to $5k/mo. $5k got you 100 blogs/mo. This was unheard of at the time.

The name Content at Scale fit. It was the only way to truly scale your content marketing efforts. This simply wasn’t possible before.

Unfortunately, the content output was just not good enough.

We had to pause billing, go back to the drawing board. A few months later, we decided to focus exclusively on the software platform side of it. We cancelled all the done-for-you revenue and focused on the software.

We got the AI to deliver the outputs to a level I felt comfortable releasing it. September 5th of 2022, that’s what we did.

We were the first to bring a long form AI SEO writer to the market. One where you could input a target keyword and out comes a 2,000 word article. We were also the first to bring ‘undetectable’ content to market. Our AI detector was used by hundreds of thousands of people per month shortly after it came out in the fall of 2022 (before ChatGPT).

But now, the vision has scaled far beyond just content.

AI Writing Became Commoditized

Once ChatGPT hit the market, AI writing became a thing. It was mainstream. Since we were first and well positioned, we got to ride that wave to great heights.

The challenge is, more and more people could just spin up a wrapper software using OpenAI’s API and all of a sudden that had themselves an AI writer tool. Clones were sold everywhere. They STILL pop up on the daily. In fact, I think two more AI writers got released since you started reading this blog.

Content at Scale was once the only way to scale your content marketing at a fraction of the cost of humans. Fast forward a year, and very few were using humans for their content marketing efforts. So this was no longer a draw.

In fact, now we were one of the more premium solutions on the market for “AI writing”.

Nevermind we used hundreds of thousands of tokens. People were happy to pay pennies for content that was 60% of the way there from ChatGPT and cheap AI writers vs dollars for content that was 95% of the way there in our system.

We plateaued and stopped growing. We needed to do more.

And we did, we decided to roll out all the normal generative AI writing type functions so you wouldn’t need two subscriptions. We had a built-in editor, paraphraser, content improver/expander, we added AI agents. We added a payment plan for the detector which was driving hundreds of thousands of visits.

It helped, but not like we thought… another plateau.

We went even deeper into research to ensure our content quality was the highest and most optimized on the market. We call it “Deep Research”. It’s looking at news, social sites, research articles, and a lot more in order to put together content now. Even more tokens being used.

Then… it got interesting…

Warning: I’m about to get a little nerdy…

We started needing a way to do something with the amount of research we would use for every blog post. We adopted RAG processes, but we needed to do more. So we went to work on a proprietary mix of NLP and semantic understanding and knowledge graphing to give us a robust graphing solution that would be used to create content at an even deeper level.

In fact, what we realized is this opened up a lot more opportunities with what we could do with this technology.

We ended up realizing this wasn’t just Content at Scale any more.

Through the amount of prompt chaining we did for creation and research, to how we connected things together in the content creation phase… how we could add chain of thought frameworks to LLM’s that sat on top of our graphing and do some really interesting things – we decided to launch ChainAI.

ChainAI is basically an R&D organization that continues to work through various machine learning and NLP frameworks and continuously tests the limits of LLM’s. We will launch future potential products through ChainAI, but BrandWell remains our flagship.

We Had to Evolve

“Content at Scale” just didn’t make sense any more. We wanted to do more than just be great at optimized content, we knew we needed to help customers grow a brand. This is what Google loves anyway, but this is how we can make a real impact for our customers.

From here, we use this information to identify pages that are poorly optimized, topical gaps for content ideation, identify your brand’s unique voice, and manage to identify which of your pages to link to when creating new content.

This is all working for you automatically, without you needing to do anything.
