To get SEO clients, choose a clear buyer, demonstrate a relevant problem with verified evidence, offer a bounded next step and follow through with a measurable delivery plan. A large contact list or a dramatic ranking promise is not a substitute for service fit.

This eight-step process covers positioning, useful audits, outreach, partnerships, proof and acquisition measurement. It also shows how to use BrandWell’s current research and content workflow to support the work.

1. Define the client you can serve well

Choose a useful starting segment: for example, multi-location service businesses needing consistent local content, or software companies with outdated implementation guides. Explain the task and delivery constraints rather than describing your audience as “any business that needs SEO.”

  • Need: what useful customer question or conversion path is missing?
  • Fit: do you have the relevant expertise and delivery capacity?
  • Access: who can approve changes and provide search or revenue evidence?
  • Budget: what work can be sustained, including implementation and review?
  • Exclusions: what would make the engagement unsuitable?

Validate these assumptions in conversations. Do not treat a guessed average industry budget as evidence that a particular prospect can buy. The Australian government’s marketing-plan guide provides a useful structure for audience, activities, costs, timing and review.

2. Make your own offer easy to assess

Your website should explain the buyer, service, process, evidence and next step. Show the actual scope: research, content updates, technical diagnosis, implementation coordination or reporting. Clarify who does each part.

Publish useful examples of your work, including a reviewed article or a small audit with its limits stated. You do not need to invent a client case study to demonstrate a method. Label a demonstration as a demonstration.

Test the inquiry form on mobile and confirm someone owns the response. A ranking screenshot without a date, query, context or business outcome is weak evidence of delivery.

3. Choose a manageable acquisition channel

ChannelUseful first actionEvidence to record
ReferralsAsk a relevant client or colleague for an introductionSource, fit and permission to introduce
Partner agenciesOffer a clearly bounded complementary serviceOwnership, handoff and commercial terms
Educational contentAnswer a recurring buyer question with a worked exampleQualified inquiries and the content that assisted them
Events and professional networksDiscuss a real service problem and agree a next stepInterest, context and requested follow-up
Reviewed outreachShare a verified observation with an appropriate recipientSource, eligibility, replies and qualified conversations

Swipe the table to see all columns.

Start with a pilot you can review. Respect each platform’s rules and your applicable communication requirements. Do not automate connection requests or treat every enriched contact as eligible for every channel.

4. Offer a bounded audit or consultation

A useful introductory audit can inspect one priority page or one customer journey. State what you can see publicly and what would require access. A third-party traffic estimate is not the prospect’s verified Analytics data.

For each finding, record the URL, observation date, evidence, probable consequence, recommended action and confidence. Prioritize the next useful decision rather than producing a long checklist with no owner.

Offer a defined deliverable, deadline and review call. Do not promise a certain traffic increase or significant ROI merely because the audit found issues.

5. Write outreach around evidence, not invented urgency

Use a real observation you have checked. Avoid statements such as “you are losing thousands” or “you do not rank” unless you have appropriate evidence and context. Keep the first message easy to understand and answer.

This is body-copy inspiration, not a complete compliance template. Apply your reviewed sender identity, opt-out handling and channel requirements. Respect a refusal and keep suppression records current.

If using Outreach, review the audience, message and configured follow-up before launch. A topic signal or company match does not establish that the recipient visited your website or requested a text.

6. Build partnerships with explicit handoffs

A web design, paid media or specialist consultancy may have customers who need content support. Agree who sells, approves, delivers and supports the work. Identify any conflict with an existing client relationship.

  • Define the referred service and qualification criteria.
  • Agree the introduction method and information the parties may share.
  • Record fees or commissions, payment triggers, refunds and renewals.
  • Specify the client owner, delivery owner and escalation route.
  • Confirm capacity before accepting the first joint engagement.

A referral is not a completed sale. Count accepted introductions and won clients separately, and make any relevant commercial relationship clear.

7. Show proof and deliver with a repeatable workflow

For a real case study, document the starting point, work, period, measurement source and constraints. Obtain permission for names, screenshots and quotations. Separate measured outcomes from estimates and acknowledge other changes that may have contributed.

Use RankWell to organize the content delivery:

  1. Open the client project and review the available evidence in Visibility.
  2. Research the buyer question through Visibility → Keywords → Research.
  3. Use Strategy check → Check opportunity to inspect existing content before assigning another page.
  4. Prepare a brief with verified product facts, sources, audience and project voice.
  5. Review the draft, images, search preview and recommendations with an editor.
  6. Approve delivery to the configured destination, inspect the public mobile page and save the change date.

For separately scoped prospect research, MarketPulse intent data is available starting at $500/mo. Review the available topics and fit before using results in an approved workflow. Research signals do not replace qualification or channel permission.

8. Measure acquisition and delivery economics

Keep inquiries, qualified conversations, proposals and signed clients as distinct stages. Use a consistent cohort and record source, owner, costs and lost reasons. Include sales time and audit preparation in acquisition costs.

Fictional example: 40 inquiries yield 20 qualified conversations, eight proposals and two signed clients. That is a 50% inquiry-to-qualified rate, a 40% qualified-to-proposal rate and a 25% proposal-to-client rate. Two clients from 40 inquiries is 5% overall; the rates have different denominators.

If acquisition costs total $4,000, the observed cost per signed client is $2,000. A $3,000 monthly service fee is revenue, not profit. If direct delivery costs $2,100, contribution before other overhead is $900, or 30% of the fee. These fictional figures are not market benchmarks or a forecast.

Review whether the work is sustainable and the clients stay, not just whether a campaign produced replies. Increase activity only when qualification, delivery and measurement are working together.

Frequently asked questions

How can I get my first SEO client without case studies?

Use a clearly labeled demonstration, relevant experience and a bounded paid or introductory project. Do not invent client outcomes or imply ownership of someone else’s work.

Should I give away a complete audit?

Choose a scope you can sustain. One well-supported finding and a useful next step may be more effective than an unreviewed bulk report.

Is cold email always the best channel?

No. Test an appropriate channel against fit, qualified conversations, full cost and won business. Referrals, partnerships and useful content may suit a different audience.

Can I guarantee rankings to close the sale?

Promise the work you control: scope, review, delivery and reporting. Do not substitute a ranking or revenue guarantee for evidence and a practical service plan.
