A Meta lookalike audience uses a source audience to find people with similar modeled characteristics. An intent audience starts with observed research or engagement relevant to an offer. Similarity and research timing answer different questions; neither guarantees that a person will buy.
Compare them through a defined campaign test rather than assuming that an audience labeled “in market” must perform better. Check source suitability, permitted use, available reach and the quality of the resulting leads.
Lookalikes and intent audiences: the key distinction
- Lookalike question: Who resembles the people in a useful source audience?
- Intent question: Who has relevant available research or engagement evidence?
- Fit question: Can this company or person plausibly use your offer?
- Activation question: Can this source be used in the proposed destination?
A customer-based source can help frame a similarity test, but past customers are not automatically representative of the market you want next. A topic audience can help prioritize research, but a broad topic may include people with different roles and needs.
Neither input should be called a list of confirmed buyers. Keep the evidence and its limitations visible in campaign planning.
Begin with the campaign decision
Define one offer, a relevant market and the business outcome you care about. For a B2B seller, a low-cost form submission may be less useful than a qualified opportunity. Choose the outcome before comparing audience costs.
Ask these questions:
- Does the source reflect suitable customers or meaningful research?
- Are records current enough for the proposed decision?
- Is the intended use permitted for this source and advertiser?
- Can the audience reach enough suitable people to support a useful test?
- Can the sales team review and act on the resulting inquiries?
Use MarketPulse for topic and ICP research
MarketPulse finds people researching topics relevant to what you sell and lets you focus available matches with ICP filters. Use it to inspect the research area, company fit and available contact fields before choosing a next action.
- Search the available topic catalog.
- Choose a topic connected to the offer.
- Apply appropriate company and role filters.
- Review matches, overlap and unsuitable records.
- Decide which research, export or execution workflow is appropriate.

A pull retrieves available data from the previous 24 hours for one topic. Audience size and contact fields vary, and audiences can overlap. A topic match does not establish the person’s exact search query, purchasing authority or permission for every marketing channel.
A MarketPulse subscription is not a promise that every record is eligible for Meta upload or that an automatic Meta integration is included. Topic context can still support account research and useful message planning when a direct upload is inappropriate.
Verify the actual Meta configuration
Use the current Ads Manager interface to inspect what is a control, what is an audience suggestion and whether the campaign can expand delivery. Record the actual settings instead of assuming that a saved audience name describes everyone reached.
Meta Blueprint’s audience course covers custom audiences, lookalikes, data sources and Advantage+ audience. Consult the current official guidance for the setup available to your account.
A test cannot isolate audience value if its delivery groups overlap substantially or their settings differ in ways you have not recorded. Where strict separation is unavailable, describe the test as a comparison of configurations rather than of perfectly isolated audiences.
Design a focused comparison
Start with the smallest useful test your budget and reachable audience can support. A multi-cell design that produces very few qualified results can leave you with less evidence than one well-run comparison.
- Similarity configuration: A suitable source audience and documented lookalike settings.
- Research-informed configuration: An appropriately permitted source or campaign approach using relevant research context.
- Reference: A documented baseline for fit, offer and downstream outcomes.
Keep the offer, conversion page, geography, measurement window and sales treatment comparable. Record creative differences. If both the audience and message change, the result belongs to the combined approach; it does not isolate the audience’s effect.
Choose a review date and a loss limit before launch. Do not claim a fixed universal test length or sample size. The evidence needed depends on the result rate, sales cycle and decision being made.
Example: cheaper leads versus cheaper opportunities
This is an original hypothetical example, not a Meta or BrandWell benchmark. Configuration A spends $1,000 and produces 40 leads, eight accepted leads and two qualified opportunities. Configuration B spends $1,000 and produces 20 leads, 10 accepted leads and four qualified opportunities.
- A: $25 per lead, $125 per accepted lead and $500 per opportunity.
- B: $50 per lead, $100 per accepted lead and $250 per opportunity.
A looks cheaper at the form-fill stage. B looks cheaper at the opportunity stage. Neither small example establishes a reliable winner, and the media-only figures exclude data, creative and operating costs.
Review opportunity definitions, existing relationships and eventual sales before scaling. A campaign attribution report does not by itself establish incremental revenue.
Creative should fit the problem without claiming surveillance
Use relevant research to select a useful business problem and resource. A payroll software ad can discuss reducing payroll handoff work without claiming that a particular person has been searching for payroll software.
Make the ad and landing page consistent about the offer and next step. Avoid unsupported urgency, fabricated customer results or a claim that every topic match is actively choosing a provider.
Account for the whole cost
Include media, data, review time, creative, tracking and sales follow-up. If the proposed use needs identity mapping or an integration, include its effort and cost separately. Do not compare a subscription fee with another approach’s entire campaign budget.
Current MarketPulse standard plans
- Starter: One topic, weekly refreshes and 25,000 monthly contact exports.
- Growth: Three topics, daily refreshes and 100,000 monthly contact exports.
- Scale: Ten topics, daily refreshes and unlimited contact exports.
Daily use across all included topics provides 90 Growth pulls or 300 Scale pulls in a 30-day month. Weekly Starter pulls vary by calendar month. Refreshes stop at the plan limit without overage charges. Growth and Scale include AIMEE for the initial user to research and prepare steps through configured tools.
Connected products, channel usage and fulfillment may cost extra. Eligible early-access discounts are separate time-limited offers. Service businesses can use available pulls and permitted exports for client work within the applicable scope.
Frequently asked questions
Are lookalikes people currently researching my product?
The modeled similarity alone does not establish current product research. Treat research evidence as a separate input.
Is an intent audience guaranteed to outperform a lookalike?
No. Relevant fit, usable reach, creative, the offer and follow-up affect results. Compare defined outcomes and account for uncertainty.
Can I use any purchased contact list as a Meta source?
Do not assume that availability establishes eligibility. Check the source rights, advertiser authority and current destination requirements before upload. Hashing identifiers does not resolve permission.
What if the research audience is too small?
Use the research to prioritize appropriate account work or inform creative. Do not quietly broaden a campaign and continue describing its delivery as exclusively in-market.
